Asked if her first love is music
or visual art, Linder (born Linda Sterling, 1954, Liverpool) laughs: ‘I’m
polygamous and equally in love with both!’ A fixture on the Manchester punk and
post-punk scene, Linder was the singer in the band Ludus, best mate of
Morrissey, and the artist behind the sleeve of Buzzcock’s 1977 single, Orgasm Addict. Nearly 30 years on, the
artist has created a new commission, comprising a hand-tufted rug (Diagrams of Love: Marriage of Eyes) and
a choreographed piece (Children of the
Mantic Stain
), performed by Northern Ballet, as part of British Art Show 8 – the latest iteration of the
quinquennial Hayward Touring exhibition, showcasing key movers and shakers on
the contemporary British art scene.
